UBC Closes Film Production Program, Sky Falls.

UBC is shutting down it's Film Production program. Losing a film production school in Vancouver is like losing a penny; you get on with your life.

The film community in Vancouver would be well served by having fewer schools, in my opinion. While it's unfortunate that one of the oldest (if not the oldest) film programs is coming to an end it is hardly going to lead to "...good talent will no longer develop in the province if the program shuts down."

UBC's program has a strong history, to be sure, but to say that no good talent will develop without it is insulting. Not to mention narrow minded.

They had a working optical printer. That's all I have to say.

Well, if you need an optical printer in Vancouver there are other options. Cineworks has one. Sure they don't have a Super8 head, but it's a much better machine over all. 16mm to 35mm, 16 to 16. Computer control. It's a solid but admittedly flawed machine.

The UBC optical printer was pretty much useless outside of getting Super8 to 16mm. I know. I used it.

Nowadays, who prints S8 to 16 anyways. You can goto Seattle and have S8 telecine'd to HD.

I think the main loss is the lack of balance in university programs in Vancouver. SFU is "experimental" based and contrasted nicely with UBC's "narrative" focus. Still, I'll stand by my point; there are many many other schools in Vancouver to get your Spielberg on.
